Federal Government Give reasons why payment were not remitted to the Union (ASUU).

In view of the proposed strike action set by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) due to the inability of the Federal Government to redeem the Unions demands for months now. The Federal Government, on Monday, explained why it had not paid the University Revitalisation Fund and met other demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

According to the Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, who disclosed this in Abuja in an interview session with Newsmen , said the government was working hard to ensure the release of the revitalisation fund by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

But the Union , in its reaction, actually dismissed the minister’s explanation, stating that the Federal government was being dishonest in its justification of the delay in paying the revitalisation fund.

It can be recalled that in the year 2020, a nine-month strike by the Union ASUU persisted, it actually commenced in March and was called off in December, which also paralysed public universities in the country. This was as a result of the disagreement with the government over the funding of the universities and ineffectiveness and discrepancies around the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System, among others.

However, the Union had further developed the University Transparency and Accountability Solution UTAS to replace the IPPIS and as such several meetings were held with officials of the ministries of finance, education, labour and employment, and the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation before the UTAS was approved, but it has yet to be implemented.

Due to this aspect above , the FG and the Union have not been in good tidings in regards to this, the Union keep communicating with the Federal Government over this issue . Three weeks ago , the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, said the government had paid the revitalisation fund as contained in the Memorandum of Action signed with the Staffs. He also said that the money was lunched into CBN accounts pending when the conclusion of the audit will be done .

Moreover, the ASUU Chairman, Osodeke has said that the union had given the government till Tuesday (today) to meet its demands or else the Union will plan the procedures for the strike action.

Lastly, the Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, in his speech to Newsmen said that the government was working hard to secure the release of the money from the CBN and has appealed to Union to be patient as the process of meeting ASUU’s demands was in progress, he concludes.
